Checking for Residual Through an Established Feeding Tube

  • Gather the supplies

  • Place the supplies on the patient's overbed table

  • Assist the patient in assuming a comfortable position in which his/her feeding tube is easily accessible

  • Clamp the tubing of the tube feeding bag closed by rolling the roller clamp down (if gravity drip) or press the "start/hold" button on the machine

  • Disconnect the tubing of the tube feeding bag from the patient's feeding tube

  • Attach the tip of the 50 mL syringe to the open end of the patient's feeding tube

  • Pull back on the plunger of the 50 mL syringe

  • Measure the amount of aspirated alimentary secretions

  • Reinstall the aspirated alimentary secretions through the patient's feeding tub back into his/her alimentary canal

  • Reconnect the tubing of the tube feeding bag onto the patient's feeding tube

  • Unclamp the tubing of the tube feeding bag by rolling the roller clamp up (if gravity drip) or pressing the "start/hold" button on the machine

  • Unclamp the tubing of the tube feeding bag by rolling the roller clamp up

  • Regulate the drip rate of the tube feeding by rolling the roller clamp of the tube feeding bag up until the drip rate obtained is at the correct rate to deliver the formula over the desired length of time (if gravity drip) or pressing the "start/hold" button on the machine
