Donning and Removing Sterile Gloves (Open Method)

Achievement of SATISFACTORY in all categories is necessary

DONNING STERILE GLOVES
  • Gather the supplies

  • Wash and dry hands carefully

  • Place the outside wrapper of the sterile gloves on a clean, dry surface about waist level

  • Carefully open the outside wrapper of the sterile gloves by grasping the tabs above the sealed edge and peeling the sealed edges open

  • Remove the inner wrapper of the sterile gloves

  • Place the inner wrapper of the sterile gloves on a clean, dry surface about waist level with the "cuff" end closest to you

  • Carefully open the inner wrapper of the sterile gloves by grasping the folded tabs of the inner wrapper and pulling them apart

  • With the thumb and index finger of the nondminannt hand, grasp the edge of the folded cuff of the sterile glove for the dominant hand

  • Lift up and hold the sterile glove for the dominant hand with the fingers pointing down

  • Carefully insert the dominant hand, palm up, into the glove and pull the glove on

  • Holding the thumb outward, slide the fingers of the gloved domnnant hand under the folded cuff of the sterile glove for the nondominant hand

  • Lift up and hold the sterile glove for the nondominant hand with the fingers pointing down

  • Carefully insert the nondominant hand, palm up, into the glove and pull the glove on

  • Carefully adjust the gloves, toucing only sterile areas, as necessary

REMOVING STERILE GLOVES
  • Grasp one glove on the outside palmar surface of the glove cuff

  • Pull the glove off by inverting it over the hand, keeping the contaminated area on the inside

  • Continue to hold onto the removed glove with the remaining gloved hand

  • Grasp the remaining glove on the inside palmar surface of the glove cuff

  • Pull the remaining glove off by inverting it over the hand and previously removed glove, keeping the contaminated areas on the inside

  • Discard the contaminated gloves in an appropriate receptacle
5 4 3 2 1
  • Wash and dry hands carefully
5 4 3 2 1
