TERMS TO KNOW:

  1. 2-point gait
    1. crutch gait that permits weight bearing on both feet, but is a speed up of the 4-point gait
  2. 3-point gait
    1. crutch gait that permits weight bearing on one foot; the other foot cannot bear weight, but acts as a balance
  3. 4-point gait
    1. crutch gait that permits weight bearing on both feet
  4. Ambulate
    1. to walk or move about freely
  5. Cane
    1. an assistive device prescribed to provide support during ambulation for individuals with weakness, instability, pain, or loss of balance
  6. Crutches
    1. an assitive device prescribed to provide support during ambulation for individuals with paralysis, weakness, injury, or to minimize or eliminate weight-bearing on the lower extremities
  7. Single-ended cane with half-circle
    1. an assistive device prescribed to provide support during ambulation for individuals with weakness, instability, pain, or loss of balance that has a half-circle handle; recommended for individuals requiring minimal support
  8. Single-ended cane with straight handle
    1. an assistive device prescribed to provide support during amblation for individuals with weakness, instability, pain, or loss of balance that has a straight handle; recommended for individuals with hand weakness
  9. Swing through gait
    1. crutch gait that requires that both crutches move ahead together and the body weight is lifted by the arms and swung trhough and betyond the crutches
  10. Swing to gait
    1. crutch gait that requires that both crutches move ahead together and the body weight is lifted by the arms and swung to the crutches
  11. Tripod or quad cane
    1. an assistive device prescribed to provide support during amblation for individuals with weakness, instability, pain, or loss of balance that has a straight handle and broad, four-point base of support; recommended for individuals with hand weakness and poor balance
  12. Walker
    1. mechanical aid for walking that is a light-weight metal frame (usually aluminum) with a broad, four-point base of support
