High school entrants to the DeSales University Annual Poetry Festival Contest can submit up to three poems to the competition, any one of which may win the Grand Prize of a four-year, tuition-free scholarship to DeSales University. The current worth of the scholarship, $80,000, makes the DeSales prize one of the largest awards for poetry anywhere in the country, at any level of competition. Normally, five honorable mention awards are also given.

High school creative writing and English teachers have found over the years that the easiest way to submit is simply to package the collected work of a class or classes they have taught during the particular academic year and to send it in one bulk mailing via U.S. mail to the Festival Director, Dr. Steve Myers, at DeSales University, 2755 Station Avenue, Center Valley PA, 18034. Students may also submit individually to the same address. Each poem submitted should show the name of the author as well as the name and address of his or her high school. The length of the poems is up to the individual author’s discretion, though it’s important to note that traditionally the winning poems have been relatively short lyrics of less than a page in length, typed single-space. A member of DeSales’ Enrollment Services team will make every attempt to contact contest winners the week before the Festival. Please note that this year’s deadline for submissions is April 4, 2006.
