Salesian Center Receives "Faith & Reason" Grant

DeSales University received a grant award in the amount $75,000 at the Fides et Ratio convocation, held in Chicago (IL) on August 13th.  The grant, to be distributed over the next five years, was made by Dr. Donald D'Amour, chief executive officer of Big Y Foods, Inc. and is earmarked for programs to be created through the Salesian Center for Faith & Culture.

The mission of this grant is inspired by Pope John Paul II's account, expressed in his 1998 encyclical letter, of why and how we must pursue the quest for wisdom by nurturing both faith and reason.  Through a competitive process involving sixteen invited institutions, the grant sought to encourage and assist small Catholic liberal arts colleges in enrolling and educating students who desire to understand their faith as integral to their educational experience.

DeSales University was one of six finalist award winners.  Fr. Bernie O'Connor, president of DSU, received the grant from Dr. D'Amour and His Eminence Francis Cardinal George, OMI at a ceremony held on the campus of Loyola University in Chicago.

Income from the grant will be used to support the endowment of the Salesian Center for Faith & Culture and to create two new programming initiatives:  an honors program featuring seminars on faith and reason, and a collaborative leadership training program that highlights Salesian spirituality in its application to organizational management.
